Extra info
The land over which the lovely Ham Manor golf course has been laid out for more than 67 years has a long and distinguished history. Today the golf course is separated from the sea by a main road, a small town and some two miles. It is difficult to picture the area criss-crossed with creeks and inlets, with access by boat to a quay at Poling which lies on the landward side of the course. The square-cut Georgian mansion which affords the club such excellent facilities today was once the home of the Gratwicke family. In the clubhouse there are card rooms and the finest three-table snooker room in Sussex. There is also a table tennis room and indoor bowls are played. There is also an outdoor bowling green.
The mansion was built in 1822 by Sir William Gratwicke a well-known racehorse owner and trainer. He achieved two Derby successes in 1829 and 1845 with horses called Frederick and Merry Monarch. Under the trees near the 18th green a simple headstone with the inscription "Frederick 1837"
