Extra info
The magnificent Zimbali Golf Course, designed by Tom Weiskop, has established itself as one of the major challenges in South Africa. The course has two differing moods as it crosses from open former sugar cane hillsides to a forested environment with a lush semi-tropical landscape. In both cases the Indian Ocean acts as a majestic backdrop to holes that either sweep dramatically around sparkling and substantial water features or undulate along tree and bush-lined fairways.
The open areas, (holes one to eleven) are memorable, as the intimidation from several high tees is counteracted by the splendid vistas that abound. The fairways are actually quite wide, though the first time golfer here will not have that correct perception. This is because from the high tees, the landscape is panoramic and the eye will take in the punishing rough that awaits the pulled or push shot. Added to this are the substantial water features that come into play on many of the holes. On the forested areas, (twelve to eighteen) the sense is at first of even tighter fairways, however, again, this is perception, as many of the tree-lined areas are actually quite wide. Nevertheless, the golfer will need to bring his or her ‘A’ game to master this excellent layout. This is because Mr Weiskop, given such a wonderful rolling landscape, made sure he maximised the beauty of the land, by stretching the use of the sweeping and dramatic contours on offer, and on completion of his excellent fairways he introduced large and undulating greens to complete the canvas.
