Golf Course architect, Peter Matkovich has in recent years designed some excellent golf courses around Southern Africa. He began his career right here at Umhlali where you can see the results of a talent that is now recognised not only throughout South Africa, but also internationally. The Umhlali Golf Course is, to my mind, the ideal golf tourist venue, providing a challenge to the low handicap golfer at the same time allowing the high handicapper some margin for error to still enjoy his or her round. This is achieved by wide fairways that follow the natural rolling terrain so typical of this part of the world. The course is tree-lined with magnificent coloured bush and indigenous vegetation. The holes are varied and there is clever use of water features, especially true where the greens of the 2nd, 6th and 8th holes meet at one single dam.
The course is in good condition year-round and the club has always been renowned as an excellent social club and the welcome in the clubhouse and pro-shop is especially warm and both are professionally run.
Up until recently an added attraction (hazard?) were the Zebra that enjoyed the golf course as residents. These were introduced in careful consultation with the Natal Parks Board. Due to the introduction of a housing development built on adjacent land, it was decided to ensure the long-term safety of these charming residents and they have been moved to a more suitable environment. No doubt they are highly pleased to avoid dodging wayward golf balls! The charm of the Zebra may have been lost, however please note the wonderful bird life of this area and note the occasional buck that still roam freely on the course.
